Ghost Walk a Spooktacular Success!

This year’s Ghost Walk around Warcop attracted 127 people including lots of youngsters in Halloween costume (and quite a few adults!) This shows how it continues to grow with some people coming from afar to experience the scares and surprises. On a perfect, cold moonlit night, walkers were treated to a poetic story brilliantly delivered by the fabulous Juliet Golding. A scary ride on a Ghost Train proved a big hit and thanks to the Stainmore Railway guys for all their hard work and creative contributions! There were fireworks at Warcop Hall to round off an eerie evening of collecting ghosts, monsters and zombies from around the village.

Refreshments were served back at the Parish Hall and the best pumpkin lanterns and fancy dress costumes judged and prizes awarded. Overall, the evening raised £220 for hall funds.

Halloween Scream – Covernote Evening a Great Success!

The Halloweeen Scream evening of dancing and music with local band Covernote, was a brilliant event. The bring and share supper resulted in lots of lovely food, there was a busy bar and a raffle. The songs got people dancing and singing all night long and there were guest appearances from local people in addition to the band’s line-up, including a rare performance by backing vocalists, The Ghostettes!

Overall, the evening made £666 – a total that is both spooky and fantastic! Thank you to everyone who helped set up the hall, organised the food and bar and also who helped to clear up afterwards. Thanks also to Covernote for their fantastic music. Everyone who came along said they had a great time and we hope to have another similar evening early in the New Year.

New Notice Boards for Warcop & Sandford

20171022_16423820170929_11213820170929_112538The Parish Council has now purchased two new, green notice boards for Warcop and Sandford to replace the damaged ones. Both noticeboards have been erected and the Parish Council would like to thank Max Voican who agreed to fix them. Both are slightly larger than the previous ones as we want to try and accommodate and display as much community information as possible.

We have the same system with a key attached on a chain for people to open and close the boards as there are two locks, one at each corner. Please be aware that the doors lift upwards and are on gas struts. We hope you like them when you see them!

Memorial Bench at the Parish Hall

Warcop Parish Council and the WI have jointly funded a new memorial bench in memory of Margaret Thomas and this is now in position at the Parish Hall. It is made of re-cycled plastic and looks very smart. We hope that you will have a sit on it – when the weather decides to behave itself again!

In addition, the proceeds from the highly successful Thursday Foyer Cafe have been used to provide:

  • a much-needed free-standing fridge in the kitchen to store extra supplies for larger events.

Trustees are working to purchase new, comfortable padded chairs and some new tables in the near future.

Bleatarn Receives Third Defibrillator

Following the generosity of local people in donating large amounts of money for defibrillators in our Parish, we are pleased to announce that there was enough funding left over to purchase a third one. This has now been  placed on the outside wall of Gordon and Hazel Deighton’s in Bleatarn, and we are extremely grateful to them for agreeing to this and also to fulfil the weekly checks.

Thanks also to Andrew Allison who agreed to fit the defibrillator free of charge, as he did with the other two in Warcop and Sandford. We are now well supplied with this life-saving equipment in our parish area.

Warcop Art & Craft Exhibition 2017

Some 400 people visited the second Warcop Art & Craft Exhibition over the Bank Holiday weekend, which showcased the talent of 40 local artists and crafts people. Visitors from far and wide were treated to a variety of work from paintings in a range of media, jewellery, wood-turning, glassware, quilt-making and many other crafts. Some exhibitors were selling their work while others were happy just to show what they had created.

There was a fantastic range of cakes and treats provided by local volunteers which went down very well too. Many children attended and there was a Treasure Hunt and a drawing competition. All visitors voted for their favourite piece and also for the best piece of art by pupils from Warcop C of E Primary School. The raffle featured about 20 art and craft pieces donated by the exhibitors.

Overall, the event raised over £1000 which will go towards purchasing much-needed equipment for the Parish Hall. The organisers would like to thank all the many volunteers who staffed the hall and helped put up and take down the exhibition, which now looks like becoming a popular annual event on the local art and craft scene.

Chapel Garth Parking and Access

There is a growing problem of access to Chapel Garth and Martindale View caused by the increasing number of cars parked on the pavement. There is insufficient room for larger delivery vehicles, bin and recycling lorries to make the right turn into the development so that the grass verges are now cut up and  messy.

The Parish Council has contacted Cumbria Highways to  ask them to assess the situation and to consider re-shaping the bend to allow better turning space. So far we have not had a response, but we’ll keep trying.

Please can residents kindly do their best to park their cars as safely as possible and avoid trailers in the car park and taking a parking space up? Thank you.

Eden District Council agrees to Removal of Wellingtonia Tree in Warcop

As you may have seen in a recent article in The Herald, at a recent EDC Planning Committee meeting, an appeal was made to remove the Tree Preservation Order which had been placed on the 92 feet high Wellingtonia tree in the centre of Warcop, because of increasing safety concerns. This damage caused to an adjoining property by falling branches during the November storm (see photos below) proved to be a convincing example of the risks.

After representations from the EDC Tree Officer and the appellants’ representatives, followed by close questioning and discussion, the committee voted by 6 to 4 in favour of the removal of the tree, with the condition that it be replaced by a native variety.

Official Opening of Warcop Parish Hall by HRH Princess Anne, Tuesday 21st March 2017

20170321_120841

Warcop was blessed with sunshine (and snow) for the arrival of the Princess Royal to officially open Warcop Parish Hall. A large group of invited guests attended to meet Princess Anne, including all the staff and pupils from Warcop Church of England Primary School.

The Princess arrived at the army camp by helicopter before driving to the Hall where she was greeted by the Chair of the Trustees, Ray Bromby and fellow trustee and Booking Secretary, Joyce Keetley. She was also welcomed by the High Sherrif of Cumbria, the Chair Cumbria County Council and Eden District Council and she was accompanied by the Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria.

The princess was introduced to Trustees, contractors and architects, the Events Group, flood victims, user groups and members of the community. The Princess Royal took a keen interest in the Hall and the people she met before hearing a few words from Ray Bromby and then making some very positive and supportive comments about all the hard work that went into achieving the new hall. She also stressed the need to develop it and make it work as a community facility.

Darcy Brass presented Princess Anne with a posy and Charlie Dinsdale thanked her for her visit.

Everyone enjoyed her Royal Highness’s visit and visitors were treated to refreshments provided by Farm Harvest. Well done and thank you to everyone who helped plan, prepare and organise this fantastic day in the life of our community.
